Organising for the social marketplace of ideas aka Open Innovation

A current area of focus for The Work Foundation is how the UK develops a strategy for open innovation. They are building a new employer-led research programme to examine the effectiveness of innovation ecosystems within organisations. One key question which forms the basis of this new research is what strategies organisations need to adopt to successfully manage people in an open innovation era and from this, whether social technologies help, or hinder? There are other questions but I will be focusing especially on the latter part of this question (related to social technologies) and use this blog post, leading up to a related workshop that I’m attending, to gather my thoughts and some references and ideally get some feedback from you dear reader :) (more…)

Five enduring themes around social business that ensure its longevity

This is again one of those blog posts done for personal reasons, to collect my thoughts and to reaffirm my inspiration but hopefully it resonates with readers. This post has been rumbling around in my head for some time but I was prompted to finally get it out there by a similar post from Susan Scrupski that she wrote last year on the back of the Salesforce.com Dreamforce 11 Conference (I only just found it by chance). Unlike Susan I have not had a crisis of faith but I did want, as mentioned in my opening line, to reaffirm my faith and somehow go back to my roots and discover what inspired me to start on my current path as a proponent for the benefits of social business. Please chime in if you feel inspired to, or otherwise. (more…)

Comparison of 100 Top Companies on Social Business and Innovation

This post is inspired by an excellent post with a very similar title and purpose but different angle. Jay Baer just a few days ago looked at a Comparison of 100 Top Companies on Social Business and Corporate Culture. He took data from Dachis’ Social Business Index for the most social businesses and correlated it with FORTUNE’s 2012 list of 100 Best Companies to Work For to see if being a good place to work for impacts Social Business or being employee-centric inherently impacts the social business aptitude of the company. I thought he did a fine job and wondered about the correlations with Innovation. (more…)

Social Business evidence mounting: best research, cases 2011

Amongst the plethora of annual predictions that come out at this time of year, with some very worthy efforts, I thought it useful to look backward. I’ve listed some of the excellent articles, cases and research reports from the last year that show with mounting evidence, that the case for social business is mounting positively. I’ve tried to capture the gist of my understanding and a major takeout for each report in a brief paragraph. This is mostly for my own aggregation and learning purposes and possibly for some still sceptical prospective clients but I hope you find it useful too :) The most rigorous, evidence based research reports are clustered at the top. 10 Commandments for Social Business

These are merely my views on what aspects of Social Business (see definition) are critical and should be taken into consideration before any initiative in this area, by an organisation of any kind is undertaken. I have looked at these before, each item in isolation at least, never before as an an entire list. I am compiling this list as a means of reference but I would dearly love to get other views. Is it worth compiling such a list (i.e. does it have value) and are the points I listed relevant? Have I missed any or got any wrong? If you have an interest and a moment I’d really appreciate your input in a comment. (more…)

How to select and implement social software

I was recently asked by a global financial services firm’s UK office (staff 4500 in UK) to conduct a robust evaluation/selection process for a new social idea management system. The system would replace one already in existence that was developed in-house and the main intention was to improve companywide innovation efforts. Alongside the final decision, a framework was needed for addressing implementation and adoption considerations. I have made the “case study” available for download via this site and ask only that you subscribe to my newsletter to gain access (if unsatisfied you can easily unsubscribe at a later date). Embedded Slideshare after the jump (more…)

Ideas – thin end of the Social Business wedge

Based on recent work I have done for a client on evaluating and selecting an ideas management system (see blog posts: Idea Management – Evaluation I and Idea Management – Evaluation II), I am now more convinced of this point than ever. Note that in most cases, the systems and vendors I evaluated had an emphasis on social elements as a core part of their offering. So I thought I’d capture 10 reasons why I think ideas are a great starting point for social business / enterprise 2.0 initiatives. (more…)

Idea Management – Evaluation II

Now is the time, maybe mid-way into this process I started a while back and blogged about in the previous post, to provide an update. Please read the previous post first or this post wont make sense as I’m not going to reintroduce the topic. First off just to say how amazing it has been to work with an extremely flexible and accommodating client who have been very open to some of the unorthodox ways in which I have tried to approach this. And then there are the various vendors I have worked with who have also been very accommodating as well as amazing in their own right. I have had the benefit of dealing with some very exciting, knowledgable and enthusiastic vendor representatives who have some terrific products and who are doing some amazing things with organisations in this space. I’ll chunk this into the three areas that I have been covering off since my last post: (more…)

Idea Management – Evaluation I

This post is a way of explaining (and sharing) the process I am following on behalf of a client in evaluating and selecting an idea management platform. It is particularly for the benefit of the vendors that I have openly invited to take part in the process but also for any other organisations that might benefit! It’s also another avenue for getting feedback alongside LinkedIn and Twitter (feel free to provide your input, criticism, improvements, etc. in a comment :). For some background reading and to see where this process started, visit the LinkedIn discussion I started in the open/public Idea Management Group. (more…)

Social Business Innovation

Prompted by this post over on Front End of Innovation, Idea management software is just like Facebook except everyone is talking about work, I really got to thinking about the high level concept and the result is the “infographic” below which tries to summaries several key points, leading with the main one of context. Below this is a brief bit of elaboration: (more…)
