10 things that make an intranet social and critical

I recently ran into a slew of articles and Tweets touching on this topic. Yet despite all the talk and the fact many organisations understand that the locked down intranet (1.0) of old wont do, I thought there is still much debate about what its new iteration (the social intranet) is and why it is important. So I thought I would try and collect some answers, if only for my own purposes of clarity. In essence this is a distillation of my experiences and these are my views although I did get several insights from a really excellent conversation held on the topic via Twitter which did provide lots of food for thought (see my favourite tweet further down). I would love to hear your thoughts in a comment :) (more…)

Social Business evidence mounting: best research, cases 2011

Amongst the plethora of annual predictions that come out at this time of year, with some very worthy efforts, I thought it useful to look backward. I’ve listed some of the excellent articles, cases and research reports from the last year that show with mounting evidence, that the case for social business is mounting positively. I’ve tried to capture the gist of my understanding and a major takeout for each report in a brief paragraph. This is mostly for my own aggregation and learning purposes and possibly for some still sceptical prospective clients but I hope you find it useful too :) The most rigorous, evidence based research reports are clustered at the top. 10 Commandments for Social Business

These are merely my views on what aspects of Social Business (see definition) are critical and should be taken into consideration before any initiative in this area, by an organisation of any kind is undertaken. I have looked at these before, each item in isolation at least, never before as an an entire list. I am compiling this list as a means of reference but I would dearly love to get other views. Is it worth compiling such a list (i.e. does it have value) and are the points I listed relevant? Have I missed any or got any wrong? If you have an interest and a moment I’d really appreciate your input in a comment. (more…)

10 reasons why Social Business should start internally

This is part of series of brief thoughts (hence the featured image :), I’d like to think inspired and triggered in passing by some interesting article or a discussion, as in the case of this topic. Becoming a social business (see definition) when you are starting from scratch and considering you have decided its appropriate for your company, has to start with the hard work of internalisation. I’m far from the first to say this so I’m not going to go into this in depth. It’s a fairly obvious point to me but all I wanted to do was to list the reasons why I thought this and share them to get feedback. So without further ado, here is the list (after the jump). (more…)

Internal/external social networks and management fear

This is just a brief series of thoughts (hence the featured image :), I’d like to think inspired, triggered in passing by some interesting article or a discussion. In this case I shared one of my blog posts on LinkedIn, in the Intranet Professionals Group, which is closed, so I thought I’d share it here. I received some feedback and there was some discussion in the post comments. After the jump you can catch the gist of it. (more…)

Social Web and the Enterprise: Mechanics 1

This post was prompted by the various bits of discussion I have picked up on in the last few months that try and make sense of the often confusing terminology, concepts, tools and practices that characterise the enterprise social web space. So this is an attempt to put some of those elements in place in the context of my thinking and experience :) Standard provisos apply, i.e. this is not an exhaustive set of recommendations and not set in stone – please use extreme latitude and feel free to comment and provide feedback, positive or negative. Business Transformation and the Social Web

I recently presented to a large company gathering of senior executives on the imperative for them to be thinking about transforming their companies in these difficult times and how the Social Web could play a key role in this. The presentation is available on Slideshare and embedded after the jump (note it was created under the auspices of the Netociety name before we switched to Socialwrks). (more…)
